During the last 2 months, 7 deaths and several acute reactions were notified in the UK, Belgium and Sweden associated with consumption of pills of adulterated “ecstasy”. These pills -first detected in the Netherlands- did not contain MDMA (3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine), the usual active ingredient in ecstasy tablets, but PMMA (parametoxymetamphetamine) at very high doses, another amphetamine derivative with a much higher toxicity than that of MDMA.

Over the past weekend, Energy Control has detected pills with a very similar composition in Spain. Tablets analyzed are pink-orange color with the Superman logo. The amount of PMMA found per tablet was between 140 and 173 mg, and 6 to 10 mg amphetamine.

Adulteration of ecstasy tablets with PMMA is rare but extremely dangerous. The probability of serious or fatal poisoning by consuming PMMA is much higher than with MDMA or other amphetamine derivatives. Used in combination with other drugs, the risks of PMMA are even higher.

PMMA is a substance that takes longer than MDMA to show effects, so users can take an additional dose thinking that the first one has not taken effect. This extra dose can cause an overdose of which the most serious symptom is a severe rise in body temperature.

From Energy Control we earnestly recommend not consuming pills with these characteristics and send them for analysis to a drug checking program.
