September 23, 2015

This week, bitcoin traded mostly in a sideways trend, with limited upside and downside breaks. $236 and $224 were the highest and lowest respectively; defining the range for this week’s price movement. $227 was a bottom for a $10 run up on Wednesday and Thursday, before retesting lows at $224 and moving up $10. It is now on a consolidation sideways trend from peak at $234.

On higher time frame, 12h charts, bearish sloping channel from $248 top on 6 September can be seen here. Lower lows are respecting the channel range, consolidating sideways after huge moves. As I write this, candle wicks have hit the upper sloping trend line. It could break out of the trend line and head up or repeat the trend so far, fall to the lower sloping trend line.

Interesting looking at the same channel on the 3 day; it extends back to the 2016 high at $318. This high is significant as it came during the Greek crisis, and was the closest the market has come to breaking out of the long term log trend of the past 22 months. The upper sloping trendline is bound to be tested.

Watching how price reacts with regards to exponential moving averages at current price levels is crucial, telling from previous contact with the 100, 50 and 30 day EMA. One attempt to break above 50 and 30 EMA failed preceded a low at $224 followed a bounce back up. The convergence of average lines with upper sloping trendline, makes for a zone to watch. A sideways trend for a while might be in order to gather momentum to attempt a break up. In the event of a successful break, it will follow through with force, as high as $240 where 200 day EMA cuts across. Else, failure will fall fast to the lower trend line at $220 zone.

The chart above zooms out on a trend over most of this year. Highlighted in blue is the ranging price zone price over the month of September. From similar trends in January and June, it takes 2 rebounds off support at $223. Wick extensions are reasonable just as in Jan and June.

Watch $220 support keenly and whether it holds.

Bitcoin Is Officially a Commodity says U.S. Regulator

According to Bloomberg, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission said it considers virtual currencies as commodities akin to gold, wheat and crude oil.

“In this order, the CFTC for the first time finds that Bitcoin and other virtual currencies are properly defined as commodities,”

This action, gives the CFTC jurisdiction and oversight over Bitcoin exchanges facilitating options contracts on their platforms. Trading of cryptocurrency futures and options now falls under CFTC oversight and subject to its regulations. Coinflip, Inc had charges filed against it and was ordered to cease operations.

Bank of America Files Patent for Cryptocurrency Wire Transfer System

This week, Coindesk reported US patent & Trademark Office (USPTO) published a patent application filed in March by financial service firm Bank of America to protect a

“…a system by which electronic funds could be sent between customer accounts using the underlying blockchain of a given cryptocurrency as the rails for payment.”

The patent, describes how the system would work in customer transactions and goes on to mention bitcoin, litecoin, Ripple and dogecoin as specific examples. It also mentions OKCoin, Bitstamp and BTCC as examples of exchanges that could be used.

It is interesting to see settlement systems being designed around actual public block chains, rather than private block chains.

BITCOIN WEEKLY PRICE FORECAST

This week, I am neutral to bearisj. I expect a proper test of support at $223 zone first, before any attempt to move up beyond $ 236. Price is likely to trade within a sideways range for a couple of days, before a decisive break down. Considering the EMA technicals and the bear channel from earlier chart, $ 220 is a reasonable target for a short term bottom.

My outlook for the mid term is still bearish, irrespective of any upside we might see in the next 3 weeks. I explained my thoughts in an article early this week, Bitcoin Medium Term Price Outlook.

Overall, the market is on fickle territory, trading just above a long term trendline and bouncing off it 6 times since 2012, including twice in 2015. Traders are keenly watching whether 200 WMA and this trendline will continue to hold and maintain its trading range between $ 200 and $300.
